Ever since my first introduction to Girls Inc., I’ve been inspired by the work and commitment. I was blessed to grow up with women who encouraged me and made me believe that with hard work and dedication I could do and be anything I wanted. Since joining the board, I am a witness that Girls Inc successfully provides that support through mentorship, events and programming, and motivates young ladies from ALL communities to thrive, to dream – to say yes I can too!
Karyn Kemp-Smith was born in Manhasset, NY. She is a graduate of The George Washington University in Washington, DC where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration with a secondary field in Psychology. While attending GWU, she became a member of the Mu Delta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. After graduation, she worked at Moody’s Investors Service as an Investor Liaison and later became AVP Relationship Manager in the marketing department. In 2011, she joined the Government Relations team at the Long Island Power Authority where she was responsible for communicating and promoting LIPA and its programs to state and local elected officials and serving as a liaison to the elected officials on behalf of their constituents on all LIPA related issues. In her current position as Regional District Manager at PSEG Long Island, she develops and executes community outreach plans for capital projects in the Western Suffolk region and oversees storm communications, updating elected officials on restoration efforts during all storm events. She enjoys working in this capacity and having the opportunity to work with public officials to help ensure our customers receive a high standard of customer service. In addition, Ms. Kemp-Smith serves as chair of the Community Outreach Committee on the Alliance, an employee business resource group at PSEG Long Island, and volunteers with the Community Partnership Program, where she is involved with community events throughout the year. Ms. Kemp-Smith also serves as Artistic Director at the Venettes Cultural Workshop, a not-for-profit organization located in Wyandanch, NY which fosters education through the arts. In this role, she serves as the assistant to the executive director on all creative matters, helps develop dance curriculum, and helps oversee teaching staff. It was there that Ms. Kemp-Smith was able to develop her passion for the art of dance at a young age while helping and uplifting others. It is a place where children’s talents and strengths are highlighted and where they are shown to overcome their weaknesses. The Venettes not only fosters an intelligent appreciation of dance, but also fosters cultural awareness, and establishes a scholarship fund for workshop participants to be used towards post-secondary education and for dance scholarships for summer study at various dance centers. Ms. Kemp-Smith also sits on the fundraising committee there. Ms. Kemp-Smith currently resides in North Babylon with her daughters, Skye and Sydney.
