On February 15th, girls from Saxton and South Ocean Middle Schools attended NYIT’s School of Engineering and Computing Sciences in celebration of National Engineering Week. “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” Day is designed to increase girls’ awareness about engineering and to pique their interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. The ultimate goal is to encourage young girls to consider careers in engineering and computer science.
The girls got to hear from the keynote speaker, Joyce Onore, Senior Associate at PwC and NYIT alumna. She spoke about her personal experience in the field and the different career opportunities in STEM. She engaged the girls in a Question and Answer session and gave them ideas on how to get more involved in STEM.
The girls then participated in various STEM activities from creating an LED torch light to building and designing boats with foil and straw in order to get them to float. The girls used a recombinant bike and were challenged to build a base out of gumdrops and toothpicks in order to hold textbooks. The activities were interactive and challenging for the girls who all enjoyed it very much.
