Girls Inc. of Long Island was honored to attend ‘Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day’ at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) on February 20, 2014. As part of National Engineering Week, the Department of Engineering and Computing Sciences at NYIT hosted a group of girls ages 12-18 to increase their confidence and encourage their interest in STEAM fields. Our girls from the Brentwood Community attended and were inspired by a successful speaker, and exposed to a fascinating and upcoming area of science through hands on learning. During the first part of the workshop, the girls listened to a keynote address from Laurie Cantileno, an NYIT alumnae and Client Solutions Manager for Cisco Services. Mrs. Cantileno uniquely demonstrated the key components of success which grabbed the group’s attention and positively impacted their outlook on a successful future. During the second part of the workshop, the girls were introduced to drones an
d taught how to fly them. They then were able to navigate the drones through obstacle courses. This event introduced an area of science in which they were never introduced and motivated them to explore the many other areas of science outside the classroom.
