Program Descriptions:
July 7th-11th
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Girls Inc. at Brookhaven National Lab Week 1 – Tiny Tech! An Introduction to Microelectronics
Location: Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY
They may be small, but microelectronic devices play an important role in our everyday lives. Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory are studying how to make these devices even smaller and more powerful. Discover this important part of modern science by working with other students to complete a series of activities and challenges using a digital circuit board. In doing this, you’ll learn to write code in the Arduino programming language to control LEDs, detect light and sound, and even design and play games.
No prior programming experience required to participate. Morning Programming is led by Brookhaven National Laboratory Staff. Girls will participate in DIY and teambuilding activities in the afternoon, led by Girls Inc. Staff.
HIGH SCHOOL: Bold Future Leaders Week 1
Location: Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY
Girls will dive into activities while exploring real-life skills! Through our hands-on, interactive curriculum, high schoolers will tackle everything from college and career readiness (discovering your strengths and passions!) to mastering the college process. They’ll explore business literacy, learn how to navigate high school, build stronger relationships, and level up their money smarts. Plus, we’ll cover conflict resolution, ways to uplift your peers, and so much more! Includes a field trip on July 9th to Nassau County Supreme Court for an insider tour of the local judicial system and conversation with female leadership.
Program led by Girls Inc. Staff. Participants are not required to enroll in both weeks of Bold Future Leaders: Summer Experience, but we recommend signing up for the first week (July 7-11) if you’re only attending one.
July 14th-18th
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Girls Inc. at Brookhaven National Lab Week 2 – Biotechnology: Viruses, Biofuels, Proteins, oh my!
Location: Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY
