“Shaming Rape Culture” – A Girls Inc. of Long Island PSA

SHARE

As a girls empowerment organization we take seriously not just developing the leadership skills, but also the voices of the girls we serve, as well as giving them tools and introducing them to various ways they can share their voices.

During a recent “Girls Breaking Barriers” 6-week workshop, girls deconstructed media messaging around rape culture and then re-created it by crafting a PSA representing their own thoughts about the issue. The girls selected the topic after looking at pressing concerns and trends in their own community. The PSA was entirely scripted and developed by the girls themselves.

Thank you to Best Buy Foundation for providing grant funding for the project. Special thanks to Levittown Library for providing equipment and hosting the series.

Thank you to Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr., and Mary Nori from the Office of Ed Mangano, for joining us at the screening and bringing certificates for the girls. Additionally, thank you to the Offices of Kemp Hannon, Thomas McKevitt, Norma Gonsalves, and Donald Calvin for sending Award Certificates to the girls.
