During October 2016, Girls Inc. of Long Island held two SHE VOTES! workshops where high school girls interacted with women in government and learned about the upcoming election and the political process. The girls came away with a better understanding of how politics impacts their lives and community directly.
A special thanks to Levittown Public Library and Roosevelt Public Library for co-sponsoring the workshops and to VerizonFios 1 for highlighting our important work on “Push Pause” on channel 1 & 501: “Community: Girls Inc. LI- She Votes, Girls Inc. of LI, Long Island Centennial.”
Girls Inc. staff, board members, and girls were also featured on Stony Brook University student Autumn Mcleod’s journalism piece “Women inspired to run for office following the election and women’s march.”
Thank you to these amazing women in government: Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, Suffolk County Regional Representative for Governor Cuomo Vanessa Lockel, Honorable Judge Stacy D. Bennett, Mimi Pierre-Johnson, Shelley Brazley, Olivia Santoro, LICET coordinator Gabriella Castillo, Director of Publicity for the Mayor of Hempstead Jenise C. Richardson, Legislative Assistant Kiana Bierria-Anderson, City Comptroller Shari James, and Political Organizer Tammie Williams who volunteered as panelists.
